Le 23 septembre 2023, entre 15h00 et 16h00, je me suis installé dans la grande cour du Louvre à Paris. J’ai demandé à des gens choisis au hasard de me prendre en photo - toujours au même endroit, et sans expliquer ma démarche. Une cinquantaine de personnes - hommes et femmes de tous âges - françaises, espagnoles, italiennes, irlandaises, américaines, nicaraguayennes, indiennes, chinoises, japonaises, anglaises, allemandes, hollandaises, ont fait le choix d’un point de vue et d’un cadre.
Il est intéressant d’observer combien certaines personnes prirent ça à cœur, essayant de produire des images originales, prenant plusieurs photos, proposant des cadrages différents. La plupart voulait faire ça sous mon contrôle, me demandant par exemple si je voulais une photo verticale ou si je voulais être photographié en pied. Systématiquement je répondais : « comme vous voulez, c’est votre photo ».
On peut aussi remarquer que la majorité s’est attachée à faire un portrait, mais que quelques un.e.s ont considéré que le décor - grandiose - passait avant tout.
Je redoutais que l’exercice ne fût répétitif et ennuyeux, mais je me trompais. Ce furent des moments extrêmement particuliers, emplis d’humanité, et frôlant parfois l’intime.
On September 23rd, 2023, between 3pm and 4pm, I set in the large courtyard of the Louvre in Paris, and asked people chosen randomely to take a photograph of me - always in the same place, and without explaining my approach. Around fifty people - men and women of all ages - French, Spanish, Italian, Irish, American, Nicaraguan, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, English, German, Dutch, chose a point of view and a frame.
It is interesting to observe how some people took this to heart, trying to produce original images, taking several photos, proposing different framings. Most of them wished to do it under my control, asking me for example if I wanted a vertical photo or if I wanted to be photographed in full length. Systematically I replied: “whatever you want, it’s your photograph”.
We can also notice that the majority has focused on making a portrait, but that a few considered that the decor - grandiose - was coming first.
I was worried that the exercise would be repetitive and boring, but I was wrong. These were extremely special moments, full of humanity, sometimes bordering on the intimate.
